The hotted-up yellow canary 1974 Volvo, with the power bulge in the bonnet and wing-size spoiler at the back, and the Holden with the 666-DMN number plates spotted while heading to the Noosaville Street Fest yesterday were apparently not part of the attractions.
But they sure set the scene for what is a celebration of the weird, wonderful and mouth-watering at the Thomas Street extravaganza of all things exotic, out there and deliciously digestible.
Where else can you see everyday families feeding on succulent servings of international cuisine, while marvelling as a watermelon explodes on some clown’s head and another street performer wolfs down an entree of razor-sharp steel swords?
This is fringe festival meets fine-food fair at eat-cheap prices, producing the love child of Brisbane Expo ’88 ... with a nicer, cleaner river as a backdrop.
Some of the acts might have been stilted and Cosmic Colt the stunt clown may have “bombed” in the most spectacular of ways with his volatile fruit, but the thousands of folk who turned out to the street fest lapped it all up. The Noosaville Association traders know they are on a winner, thanks to the amazing free theatre they sponsor to help showcase one of Noosa’s fabulous east streets.
Association president Richard Polack said the entertainment was international class, having featured in the finest festivals around the world, including Edinburgh and Glastonbury.
“And the food is fantastic – we’ve asked all the stall holders to keep the servings $10 or under,” he said. “We certainly have the weather to get a big crowd – last year we had over 6000.”
