Years ago if you advertised a shindig with Queensland wine as the one of the main attractions, the guest list might include those who like to swig their plonk by the flagon – brown paper bag optional.
But these days, with the Granite Belt and its multi-medal winning wineries, such as Ballandean Estate, leading the way, Queensland wine is served at all the best tables.
Most of these top drops made an extended appearance on Saturday at the grand marquee in Noosa Heads Lions Park.
The Queensland Wine Expo was thick with hip winemakers and connoisseurs. Not a stray bottle of Porphyry Pearl sweet wine was in sight as judges tasted and named the best white and red, and the public decided the people’s choice.
Some of the corkers include Summit Estate, Robert Shannon, Witches Falls, Symphony Hill, Jimbour Station, Sirromet and Clovely Estate.
On Saturday, these samplings helped wash down sensational food prepared from fresh Queensland produce. Celebrity chefs conducted cooking demos and there were tastings from 14 top local restaurants. Entertainment was courtesy of Vanessa Amorosi – the darling diva of the Sydney Olympics who is once again hot property.
