Car crashes into home at Eudlo

An 81-year-old man accidentally reversed his car into a home in Eudlo this morning.

The Flaxton man had been visiting family on Anzac Road when witnesses said he accidentally reversed instead of going forward.

His Mitsubishi station wagon ploughed through a thick wooden post supporting the fence and then continued another 10 metres into Melissa Wood’s low-set home just before 11am.

The car crashed through the corner of her garage and her home office, coming to rest almost 20 metres from where it first left the road.

No one was injured in the crash.

Melissa wasn’t home at the time of the accident.

A neighbour called her to let her know about the incident and although she was shocked to see the station wagon inside her home of four years, she was relieved no one was injured.

“That’s all that really matters,” she said.

“We can fix this. It could have been much worse.”

Firefighters were working on supporting the damaged part of the home so the vehicle could be removed.

See my fellow cyclists. This is why we shouldn't ride in lanes with cars. If you're on a bike, keep as far away from those car drivers as you can. That's my advice.

Make it compulsory for all drivers to go for a full driving test every 5 years. Those who don't pass can either complete a defensive driving test and take the driving test again, or their licence is disqualified. A simple plan which would help stop many of the accidents, big and small.

Only a matter of time before one of these "I cant remember what gear or pedal to use" incidents costs someone their life.

We must do something about this NOW!

The older generation need to start being tested on their driving ability on a regular basis, I'm sorry to say it, but the minds of older people just aren't what they probably were when they first passed their tests, and it's accidents like this one that occur because of it. Does anyone remember Sophie Delezio, the little girl who has already been in 2 car accidents in her lifetime? To my knowledge, BOTH those accidents involved elderly drivers. Regular sight, reaction and ability tests should become compulsory for anyone at least 70 or older...
