Twelve of the top boardriding clubs from Northern NSW to Noosa Heads will be in town this weekend to battle it out for the inaugural Coolum Teams Challenge.
Each club will consist of a six-man team of one junior, one senior and four open competitors.
A unique feature of the event will be an innovative new finals format set down for Sunday.
The top eight teams from Saturday will move on to a cut throat team versus team and man-on-man heat format to determine the top club of the event and claim the inaugural championship.
Coolum Boardriders president Chris Barraclough said the event would give the Sunshine Coast its own teams challenge to rival the long-running Kirra Teams Challenge (Gold Coast) and the Straddie Assault (North Stradbroke Island).
“It will be great having it in our backyard,” Barraclough said.
“With the likes of 2007 Queensland champ Trevor Tripcony and young up and comer Eli Criaco, the local talent will get a chance to shine on their home waves”.
Other top surfers taking part include Mitch Coleborn, Chris Friend, Dale Lovelock, Mark Richardson, Samba Mann, Brendan Leckie, Dale Richards, Shaun Stevic, Dean Iezzi, Noah Lane and Dru Adler.
The top three Gold Coast clubs will be competing, with Snapper Rocks, Kirra Boardriders and “The Alley”, all out to capture the title ahead of six Sunshine Coast clubs.
Local clubs include Coolum, Mudjimba, Noosa, Kawana and Wind ’n’ Sea from Caloundra.
The event will also be the final round of the Queensland Club Championship to determine the No. 1 club in Queensland.
Sunshine Coast club North Shore Boardriders on 1720 points is favourite to take out the prestigious title after being the bridesmaid twice in Straddie Assault and the Kirra Teams Challenge.
Kirra Boardriders are in second place on 1556 points, while Mudjimba Boardriders on 1462 points in third place will be on a high after claiming the Straddie Assault title last month.
The action kicks off at 8am both days with the heat draw to be held at the Sol Bar Coolum Beach on Friday night and presentations to be held at the Sol Bar on Sunday afternoon.
