Ask Bob Abbot

See Bob Abbot's answers to more questions on the website on Monday.

The Sunshine Coast Daily is giving readers a chance to ask Sunshine Coast mayor Bob Abbot questions about the future direction of the region.

Amalgamation has thrown up challenges that the council has needed to deal with and there will no doubt be more challenges in the future.

Put forward your suggestion for a question that our journalist can ask Mr Abbot by adding a comment below.

A selection of questions will be put to Mr Abbot and results will be published in the Sunshine Coast Daily on Monday, October 20 with more comprehensive coverage on the thedaily.com.au.

You will be able to suggest your questions until Thursday, October 16.

As we all know there are large numbers of residents on the coast that have lived in other parts of Australia and around the world whom collectively have a vast and varied life experience. Would the council consider creating a formal process to draw on this priceless commodity in its decision making processes. It would seem a crime not to take advantage of this wealth of knowledge at our finger tips.

Hi Bob,
I beleive this was done by the last council.
The traffic Island at Sunco motors, to of Wises Road,
why was the entry to the highway closed off there ?
Instead, now all traffic have to go down Wises road, throgh three sets of lights, crazy when they could be already on their way and would half the traffic flow down Wises road . Not Rocket science.

1. will you change the dog control laws to include cats? So that cats are treated the same as dogs - registered, on a leashoutside of the property and not allowed to roam.

The cat protection societies around australia all want councils to bring this in. I'm sure your council staff are cat owners because all I get from them is a quote that cats are an emotional subject. they wouldn't be an emotional subject if they were treated the same as dogs.

2. Will council put in a zebra crossing or a pelican crossing between Dicky Beach shops and Tooway Shops - there is no safe place to cross a very busy stretch of road. Kids and geriatrics regularly risk death because ther is no crossing. That part of the road network is listed as a commonwealth black spot primarily because of pedestrian accidents.

I know there is a planned walkway beneath tooway bridge, but until then another summer of risking death on a road named as a black spot is what kids and the aged and those of us who aren't so aged have to face whenever we try to cross to the doctors or the beach

3. Will council bring in tree preservation areas similar to Randwick council or Queanbeyan council - both pieces of legislation are on the internet.

Many of our finest trees are being chopped down in the name of development. we are losing our urban forest at an extraordianry rate. Every tree over 30 years old should be deemd a significant tree and protected by legislation.
Every tree over a certain girth should be regarded as a tree of significance.
As should nesting trees - trees that allow breeding of birds, marsupials and reptiles to keep these in our urban forest.

On moffat beach we have seen a huge tree poisoned so that house sales could be made without an ugly tree blocking the view of the ocean. It is common knowledge in the community and the real esate industry that the norfolk pine was poisoned to allow a bigger dollar value on the sale of a property. This has to stop and tree protection legislation may stop the greedy from trying to make a quick buck.

4. Will council set aside land for allotments so that those who live in the multitude of blocks of flats springing up around the coast can rent a bit of dirt near their flat and grow some fruit and vegetables?

Allotments are an amazing success in places such as Germany, even England where allotments were starting to be closed down has had to resume creating allotments for their flat dwellers.

maybe council could include allotments in the list of must do's for 'developers" before they are allowed to build a block of flats - include an allotment as well as parking spaces for every flat built.

Bob,
Please put on your vest of many colors and consider a monorail type of transport system for the coast. A forward thinking guy like yourself surely must know how this can only benefit the entire coast. Just look at the impact on Mooloolah the rail has had.

For The Mayor. Will i be able in the next 5 years to subdivide my property to allow my several children to build a home for them and their families. I own ten acres, 5 min. walk to Eumundi Railway station and 5 minute walk to Eumundi Post Office., There is a sewerage treatment plant within one kilometre and town water is available nearby. My land is classed as cane land(probably to prevent Subdivision), but has never grown cane. Our land is elevated, serviced by a tar sealed road. If i am unable to subdivide then my children will most likely have to move away from the Coast in order to have their own home. It seems to me that the big developers have a monopoly on legally subdivisable land and are ensuring this remains so. I have been asking around and many people years ago purchased their present home and land with the long term prosect of subdividing to provide homes for their off spring. If the present strangle hold by developers continues then the price of land can only increase out of all proportion to the land available. yrs Sincerely R. Buchanan

Will he stop pandering to the lowest common denominator of mean spiritedness and acknowledge that the Coast's water security does not require "a guarantee that there will be a pipeline headed north", only the condition already enshrined in the legislation that the design provides for the ability to augment the system and create a two-way flow in the future? Will he abandon the notion that meeting his responsibility to ensure the secure supply of potable water for the Coast requires him to be seen to oppose the SEQ water grid concept of allowing water to be transferred from areas with surplus water to those in need?

Bob
Recently the Cr Green (ex Noosa) stated his support of LNP to allow residents a vote on de-amalgamation. Polls now show that after next years election there is a real chance that they will form governmnt in Qld. If so, it is a no brainer that Noosa will vote to de-amalgamate.

1. How can ratepayers have any confidence that this councillor will represent the best interests of all ratepayers and the organisation he is paid to represent when he clearly has shown his preference is that the organisation be dismantled?

2. Why is this behaviour being tolerated by the CEO and the elected representatives?

3. If, (and let's remember that this is now a real possibility) Noosa de-amalgamates, will you remain as Mayor of the SCRC or will you return to Noosa?

Spare me "SpareUs from Spin", this water legislation was forced upon us by a government lack of future planning causing an emergency which has nothing to do with the Sunshine Coast.
It was nothing but theft wrapped in Beattie Labor spin !

Are there any other Sunshine Coast assets you'd like to hand over to "those in need" ?
Your private bank account ?
Maybe you could hand over your vehicle, or your house?

Hi Bob. How much longer is the Town Square in Nambour going to take? It took almost 6 months to just build the toilets outside. Also, why have you extended the footpath from the Nambour Plaza to the Post Office with bitumen? It looks terrible.

Eugene, either nothing or everything is forced upon us, no matter what government there is no choosing what happens. Thats how democracy works. People seem to have this falicy that beeing a democracy means you get to choose what happens. All democracy means is that we choose our leaders, thats it nothing more. Along your type of thinking we could say council orced higher rates upon us, forced us to go to different beaches with closure of la balsa, forced us to stay in a rented house because they wont approve the land that im waiting to buy to build on. Anyway I hope you see what I mean.
Anyway my question for Bob is what the heck is going on with the Maroochydore/sunshine coast CDB. There has been little mention of it and surely the plan for what will happen with it should be released ASAP. And will it be a real CBD? or will it just be another street with a government building on it?

Mr Mayor, when will your council (and Governments) appreciate the contribution self funded retirees have made to both the Queensland and Australian lifestyle by offering the same discounts normal pensioners receive? not the pension payments, but the discounts.
When our own hard earned money runs out we are going to be another burden on all other pensioners and he government. Some help along the way will extend OUR FUNDS further. Think past the next election and think about everyones future.

When is the council going to give us green bins to recycle our green waste? We pay such high rates with hardly any basic services. I have lived in over 10 different council areas all over Australia and this is the most appalling recycling council I have ever lived in. All the green waste can be recycled into compost and mulch and resold to the public. A win win for all.

Why are we going to be sending water to Brisbane when not everyone here has access to city water? Also, when is the Razorback Rd going to be paved? That is one of the scariest roads on the Sunshine Coast, it's down to little over one lane in some parts (without adequate warning coming around corners I might add). It's also a road that parents use to take their children to the school in Montville - so when, when will the road we drive our kids to school on be made safe???

Mr Mayor -
1) can we move forward a better public transport system on the Coast; particularly light rail/monorail along the CAMCOS corridor? Before the next millenium, please.
2) In the interim, the bus service is terrible & does not take into account many of the new roads or population centres; it needs a complete revamp of all routes (I understand that this is a State Government issue, but the BCC works with the State on Brisbane's bus service which is far better)
3) The rest of the coast needs some decent bikeways (like Noosa has)

Big Bob, in light of the reduction in household spare cash, the financial market nationally and internationally and that Council will start its next budget cycle soon, wouldn't it be nice if the Council stated that the budget will be kept at zero growth - this is to include all rates, fees, levies and any other names taxes are badged.

One way to reduce increases, is to remove beautificiation programs. After the last 10% rates increase, Cr Dickson came out and stated he was pleased he had $270k in beutification works for his division. In tough financial times, everyone, including Govnt must tighten their belts.

Will council examine houses built under the old Calounda Council regime on Kawana Island to ensure all properties have stuck to the councils rules of houses only having a footprint of no more than 50% of the block of land.

If builders have gone over the 50% footprint will you order the reduction of the building to bring it into line with council rules?

If you think there isn't a problem have a look at google earth for that area.

Hi Bob,
More bike paths and less traffic lights.
Wises Rd, Maroochy 'round about' and Jones Rd/Maroochy Rd overpass are three examples of very poor road planning. As for 6 lanes at Alex...how can we trust any future road planning. Noosa has bikepaths everywhere and hardly a traffic light anywhere. Slow the cars down, direct the through traffic away from the holiday areas and make this part of the coast somewhere we can all be proud of, please.

Hi Bob
Please ask your engineers to roll out some bicycle lanes on the roads like they've got in Noosa so us cyclists can be safer on the roads. I use my car much more than I have to because of concerns for my personal safety. The same goes for footpaths. Is Council doing anything to improve bus services or is it leaving it all up to the State Government to decide what we get?

As noted above, tomorrow's ride to work day: problem is that if you leave the very edge of the coast, there are hardly any bikeways.

Bob, do you reckon you can get some of that money that Kevin is talking of throwing around for NATION BUILDING to resource some master planning for the towns and centres on the coast so you can get ahead of the game for a change?
There is a lot of talk about infrastructure for roads ports bus ways etc, not much about the sort of infrastructure that enhances livability such as libraries, galleries, performance venues etc. that occures at a local level. Noosa has done a great job in the past with the Majestic Theatre in Pomona and the J. How about a consistent strategy for the whole coast.

When the council offices be amalgamated into one? It is expensive and not neccessary to have all of them operational. You ring the Sunshine Coast Council for info then still have to call the Maroochy or Caloundra Council to get the info. The service at the Caloundra Council is almost non existent and some of the rudest staff are employed there. Forget doing business after 4.30pm of a day because the shop is shut. Unfortunately we dont all get to finish work at this time and when the call centre cant answer your queries there is no avenue to get info after 4.30pm. If you truly are amalgamating then lets start seeing some signs and stop the petty nonsense of worrying about a logo, ratepayers have more things on their mind than what the letterhead looks like.

What is the SCRC doing about the Powerlink proposed 275KV transmission line route proposed over a year ago? The majority prefer any line be situated adjacent to the highway involving already state-owned land, 2/3rds the distance, half the number of private properties, with uncomplicated access, without EMF health risks, without enviromental and rural use recurring damages, and without destroying Eerwah Vale. Powerlink alleges the 1973 easement for the existing line legally authorized this unforeseen added line 40 years later but this claim is simply to save costs by denying landowners any compensation despite creating major land value losses. It's perhaps worse that the SCRC is ignoring this, failed community and Council consultation and the known repeated landowner bullying! Powerlink recently changed a route section in Townsville due to its Council intervention, though also moving it further west to its beleagured hinterland. The dam, water pipelines, QRail expansions, the powerlines, when are rural lands and its business and home rights protected and when does the SCRC and you, its mayor, actually "DO" something, rather than again mere words without action and excuses?

Hi Bob,
I know there are many infrastructure and funding issues to be dealt with,...But why cant we have the first Council in Australia to really address the issue of Development vs Conservation and by implication Quality of Life and Community Health vs the need to be economically sustainable.

From what I gather too many people have become so used to not having time out, that they do not even miss it anymore. This is great for meeting mortgage repayments, but bad for our overall health and well being as a community.

That's what the Sunshine coast is supposed to represent - lets make it our Unique feature to sell ourselves to the visitors that come here looking for something different.

The implications here are for our health care system and our business efficiency and our community in general.

Humans need to be allowed to exercise, de-stress and feel a sense of freedom in order to function well.

It is obvious from our stats on community health (from mental health to all preventable diseases) that our communities are severely lacking in many of the ingredients to encourage a balance of exercise (body and mind health) and general communal cohesion (fellowship) and good mental health (eg less stress).

My suggestion is that Town planning needs to meet the needs of the community in creating open spaces that ENCOURAGE outdoor recreation and communal interaction (other than just the beach and OTHER than parks that do nothing to attract people).

The other aspect of this is (conservation) to preserve the unique locations still left to ensure their preservation and for them to be accessible to the community.

For Example, How about instead of building out all the good high hilltops and coastal vistas - making some of them them easily accessible public space and encouraging families to get out in the evening to watch a full moon rise over the ocean.
(I suggest this as I am appalled at the number of people and kids I know that have never specifically appreciated that particular bit of magic - for free.)

The HUGE Parks on the edge of the escarpment in Toowoomba come to mind here as I nave never seen a park so successful, so busy (and safe) - simply because it has such a stunning draw card - its view and it big and quiet - and it is just next to town. - What a shame somebody in the past didn't leave something like that in Buderim or Noosa or Coolum (The Lions park in Buderim is such a dud and never used, too noisy and way too small and limited view. Again the need for adequate space, - what is it worth???
No not in Dollars - but in Human enjoyment!!

If we are serious about CONSERVATION - we need to get people to participate in it - so kids and adults do know what they are losing and so they will fight to retain it (or regain it).

My 2 bobs worth - 'scuse the pun

Will the council formally commit to supporting sustainable energy initiatives within the Sunshine Coast by:
a) Setting a target 20% council energy usage from local renewable sources by 2020,
b) Setting a council target for energy demand management - again 20% reduction in energy consumption over todays levels by 2020,
c) Publicly supporting renewable energy and demand management projects within the Sunshine Coast in preference to coal fired energy infrastructure projects
d) Change the building planning regulations to mandate all new building to supply 50% of their own electricity requirements by 2012.

All of these initiatives will support the council's sustainability vision and provide local jobs - to date we have had only high level words, but little concrete action.

OPEN LETTER TO MOOLOOLABA, ALEXANDRA HEADLAND AND MAROOCHY RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES

Mooloolaba locals have been through this before on three occasions. Remember brouhaha on the upgrading of Brisbane Road, The Brisbane Road Car Park, The Spit/Wharf redevelopment, I am sure you do and nothing has happened. It cost rate and business hundreds of thousands of dollar too.

Politicians, be they local, state or national government will always create a diversion away from developing problems by creating a subject of controversy and sensationalism to goad the media into a feeding frenzy. The widening of the road from the headland to Maroochy is just that another smoke and mirrors exercise. Forget about the water robbery, the state of the schools and hospitals, especially the roads and public transport.

Bob Abbott needs to get serious, as should the councillors, fix the problems we have had for many years before developing the next ten year plan.

Widen the main access into Mooloolaba and Alex and that is Brisbane Road including the bridges, provide bikeways and secure pedestrian crossings through the coast strip. Create three overhead pedestrian bridges at Alexandra Headlands, The Surf Club and Sixth Avenue, and fence off the roads.

Lastly, build that damn car park at Brisbane Road.

Failure to address seriously these identifiable long term problems will be seen as a failure of the SCRC in its first term.

Hi Bob,
The new Maroochydore Rd / Sunshine Coast Motorway roundabout......ah whatever happended to that. The Lights there are the stupidest idea ever.
ROUND A BOUT. Something about those words.
Noosa is famous for roundabouts. You know what they are. The Noosa Bob gets in for the new supa council and the one spot we needed that roundabout to be improved instead got shot in the foot with stupid lights. So retarded! Waited ages for that construction to go through its permeatations of redesign and further delays it seemed . And what do we get. LIGHTS! What! Back to the drawing board . Pull the lights and get somebody who knows what they're doing to construct no flow on /lanes for a ROUNDABOUT. YES a ROUNDABOUT.

your article says all of these are suggestions for "A" question that your journalist can ask Bob.

How about Bob go through what's here and say yep, Nope, we'll have a look at that.... save your poor journo trying to find just one question to ask him.

Why doesn't this Council get really innovative with developers and instead of them being required to build more and more car parking spaces that just encourages more cars, get them to submit to Council an employee travel plan. This could have discounted bus fares for employees and facilities at the work place for employees that walk or cycle to work. An incentives scheme could also be provided for all employees that travelled to work by other means that the private car.
