The key to good golf, Mary Joyce said, was to just get out there and have a good time.
The 85-year-old said she’d been a golfer since she was a teenager.
She recently won the Tewantin-Noosa ladies C grade club championship after bouncing back from a poor run of form.
“I was really disgusted with the way I was playing and thinking I should toss it in,” she said.
“I really love playing and I like being out in the open and the company, so I went to have a couple of lessons and got my game going again.”
Mary hooked up with club professional George Bell, who convinced her to trade in the old clubs and helped get her back in the swing of things.
“He just gave me the confidence and got my swing right again,” Mary said.
Now, armed with new drivers, Mary still plays twice a week and shows no sign of slowing. She is an inspiration to all weekend hackers.
“I just go out and play and hope for the best – try and do every stroke the same,” Mary said.
Armed with her new drivers and with confidence back in her game, it’s onwards and upwards for Mary.
But she was a little bashful when it was suggested she was a role model to others.
“I keep trying to get back into B grade,” she said. “I’m not giving it up for a little while. I’ve got a couple of years left.”
