Storm dumps 30mm of rain in an hour

A storm that swept through south-east Queensland last night dumped up to 30mm of rain in an hour on some parts of the Sunshine Coast and cut power to 32,000 properties in Brisbane.

Bureau of Meteorology data shows 30mm of rain fell at Sugarbag Road at Caloundra between 8pm and 9pm.

Diddillibah copped 26mm in the same time while other parts of the Coast received between 1mm and 12mm.

In the 24 hours to 6.30am today Maroochydore received 24mm, while Tewantin had 36mm and Noosa Heads just 10mm.

Police say there has been little damage on the Sunshine Coast, however AAP reported that more than 32,000 homes and businesses in Brisbane lost power when it was hit by heavy rain and lightning strikes.

The storm delayed the kick-off for the Socceroos' World Cup qualifier against Qatar at Suncorp Stadium by more than 30 minutes after the storm knocked out traffic lights around the stadium and flooded parts of the pitch.

The weather bureau had issued a severe storm warning for South-East Queensland early yesterday afternoon, predicting the Sunshine Coast may be hit by large hail, flash flooding and damaging winds from 3pm to 7pm, but this was cancelled later in the day.

Showers are expected to continue on the Coast for the next two days before clearing on the weekend, with a high of 23 degrees likely today and tomorrow.

Latest weather reports and warnings can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology website .

Ed, Considering my other interests, I was keeping a close on both the www.bom.gov.au and www.weatherzone.com.au sites. The Weather Bureau canceled one warning but kept the second warning. The storm cell whilst heading NNE hit Redcliffe and where I live, the house shook. This one had some punch. Some power outage along with a car accident on Anzac Avenue where a tree fell on a car. Local police manning intersections due to power. Trees down around the place but the big item being a truck rollover on the Deagon Deviation which has the Queensland Fire Rescue Service currently on the scene.

I'm an avid watcher of the BOM site in storm season. And believe me, I've wondered if anyone was home at the BOM at times when I've seen heavy storms approaching and not a skerrick of a warning.

I've seen it raining reasonably heavy, not a shower, and yet it says 'Fine' on the report for the Sunshine Coast.

Go figure huh.

They have a responsibility to warn people of POSSIBLE danger; in most cases it isn't nearly as bad as they say it will be. I would much rather hear 20 false warnings than not have a warning for a potentially fatal storm.

Even a broken clock is correct twice a day. I suspect the BOM works on the same principle.

Not a lot of good watching that radar either, I have sat here watching a big storm on the radar and it is right over the top of me, look out the window and the sun is out and not a drop of water. I can hear the storms in the the distance, but the radar is just not that acurate

last night they issued a thunderstorm warning at 6.44pm and cancelled it at 6.45pm?? Then about an hour or so later the storm arrived. I think it is very hit and miss at BOM.

Please don't blame BoM in the monsoon season.
It can be sunny on one hole of a golf course and pissing down on another at the same time.
Just be thankful we get some rain.
