Multi-instrumentalist Mal Webb, the turbo-charged Barleyshakes and funky local duo Jumbo Shack will all entertain at Peregian Originals on Sunday.
Songwriter Mal Webb is a jolly, jaw-dropping journeyman. He is eclectic, mesmerizing, and even educational.
Mal uses a world of vocal techniques and song styles and plays guitar, mbira, slide trumpet, chromatic harmonica, a loop recording pedal called Derek and the audience – a lot.
A founding member of the Oxo Cubans, Sock and Totally Gourdgeous, he did the music for the Lano and Woodley TV show and Wogs Out of Work.
Mal played mbira and sang Eagle Rock with Ross Wilson on John Safran’s Music Jamboree on SBS and has done a few spots on Spicks and Specks (ABCTV).
Ani DiFranco said, “You’re a freak”, after Mal played support for her.
Through all their various transformations through the years, it is fair to say The Barleyshakes just seem to get better and better.
From the early years of big festival tours across Europe, Dubliner Alan Kelly brought his band and his life to Australia a decade ago, where the Kelly family remain the burning core of this exhilarating band.
Part-trad, part-rock, all good fun, The Barleyshakes deliver a swirling combination of turbo-charged jigs and reels, emotive and lyrically probing ballads, and more frenzied original songs that draw on a number of influences and styles.
Jumbo Shack are a funky local duo on the rise.
Featuring guitar, bass, and percussion, Jeremy (ShowPony, bass player) and dynamic vocalist, Josh, bring a fun and lively feel to Josh’s well-crafted songs.
Peregian Originals is more than just the best live original music around. It’s the perfect whole-community Sunday afternoon.

Well said - I think you have put the thoughts of the majority in a nutshell.
There are so few places you can go these days to hear & watch artists playing original tunes.
Especially in such a great location!
I spend a bit of time O.S. and in particular New Orleans - a city that prides itself on their local musicians, and there are many free concerts in the parks (even going into the night!!).
If the world bowed down to the small minority who dont like to hear live music floating into their little worlds for a few hours each month, it would be a far sadder place for all.
