Coolum school has principals

Meet Coolum Primary School’s new principal, Judy Menary.

Well, she is the acting principal to be precise.

Long-time head honcho Pat Cavanagh has been seconded by the education department to supervise the schools in the Sunshine Coast north district.

Mr Cavanagh’s appointment is only for a three-week relieving period but circumstances, including a serious illness within the department, could see his temporary appointment extended.

Ms Menary is the principal of Buddina State School and has been also working on a curriculum project for the education department across the district.

She said she was “very excited” to be at Coolum.

“I know that the school has got a really good name and that the staff are very well respected,” she said.

“I know the school has very good outcomes for students.”

The staff, students and the parents she had met had been very welcoming, she said.

Ms Menary, who lives in Buderim, is no stranger to Coolum.

“We come up for the Coolum Kite Festival, we often swim at Coolum Beach, mum and dad holiday at the Coolum Caravan Park – so we’ve been around the area,” she said.

“We’ve lived on the Sunshine Coast for probably about 25 years so we know Coolum really well.”

Her hobbies include riding her pink surf ski, which she bought in Coolum, reading and gardening. Ms Menary’s husband, Lex, is a physical education teacher and they have two children: a 21-year-old son and an 18-year-old daughter.
