Between the two of them these boys know a lot of people.
And, more importantly, they know a lot of high schoolers who love their cricket.
In the past few weeks Ben Vercoe and Sean McDermott have rustled up as many of their friends as they could to play in the Jane McGrath Foundation fundraiser at Cooroy Cricket Oval this weekend.
The weekend of matches has been organised by their mums, Michelle Vercoe and Linda McDermott.
Michelle said she wanted to organise a fundraising weekend because she loved cricket and believed the Jane McGrath Foundation was an obvious choice of beneficiary.
“When we heard Jane had passed away I thought it would be a great opportunity to do something for breast cancer and get the children involved,” she said.
“Often it’s just adults involved in these things, so it’s making them more aware about it all.”
She said many of the people who helped organise the weekend had had their lives touched by cancer.
“A couple of friends are helping out,” Michelle said.
“One of them has a sister with cancer, and others have family members with other types of cancer, so we just really wanted to do something on that front.”
She said they hoped to raise $5000.
Four teams of under-13s, four teams of under-15s and two adult men’s teams will take part in the 20-20 series.
Each team will play its first match on Saturday. The winners will play the winners, and the losers will play the losers on Sunday.
Each cricketer will receive a monogrammed, pink polo shirt.
