When the chance came up to play a game of touch football in Coolum against the FOGS (former Origin greats), who better to put a team together than the local club that has been providing sporting enjoyment and exercise for all ages for the past 28 years.
The Coolum Touch Association chipped in $3000 for the chance to play against league legends such as Allan Langer, Kerrod Walters, Willie Carne, Michael O’Connor, Dan Stains and Billy Moore at the Delyse Shearer Pink Day last Saturday.
Coolum Touch publicity officer Chrissie Sharrock said the players and the club were keen to participate because the day was for the community.
“Delyse and the boys had been a part of junior touch for the last four or five years,” Ms Sharrock said.
“When the Footy Show announced that it was looking for a touch side to play the Origin greats in Coolum, for Coolum, we thought why not Coolum Touch?”
She said the men’s A-grade players had a “fabulous time” playing and meeting the Origin players.
The game finished a respectful 6-all draw.
The senior touch grand final will be held on Saturday, September 13, with the first game at 6pm.
As well as fast and furious footy, there will be a barbecue, a jumping castle for the children and hot and cold refreshments.
The new season of senior games starts mid-October on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
The sign-on for the new 12-week junior touch competition, played on Tuesday afternoons, will be held next Tuesday, September 9, from 4pm at the Wembley Road grounds, off Springfield Avenue.
The cost is only $40 a child for a 12-week season and includes insurance, team shirts, trophies, footballs, coaches and referees.
