100mm expected in 24 hours

100mm expected in 24 hours

Police in the Sunshine Coast district have responded to at least 15 car crashes since 6am this morning while Gympie police are currently at a crash near Kybong where three people have been killed.

Earlier today, a woman was taken to Nambour General Hospital with head injuries following a three vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway near Pomona Connection Road.

Police and emergency services were sent to a single vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway at Tanawha about 6am.

No one was injured when the car slid off the road.

At 7.30am, two vehicles collided on the median strip of the Bruce Highway between Eumundi and Cooroy.

Again no one was injured, but traffic was slowed while the crash was cleared.

A little under half an hour later, emergency services were called when a a car ran into a light pole on Steve Irwin Way at Landsborough.

The driver suffered minor injuries and traffic was blocked while the car was moved from the road.

About the same time a car crashed on Eumarella Road in Weyba Downs.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and only minor injuries were reported.

At about 8.45am, three cars and a truck were involved in a major nose to tail crash on Beckmans Road in Noosaville.

No one was seriously in the collision.

Just after 9am another vehicle slid off Duke Road at Doonan.

Another driver lost control of their car on the Sunshine Motorway at Coolum.

No one was seriously injured in either crash.

A car went into the ditch on the Bruce Highway at Sippy Downs just before 11am and no one was injured.

Police are pleading with drivers to slow down and drive to the conditions.

A police spokesman said all crashes had happened on the Burce Highway or major arterial roads.

He said drivers should slow down to at least 90kph in 110kph zones.

"People need to drive to the conditions," he said.

More rain forecast

The wet weather is set to intensify later today and 100mm of rain is expected to fall in 24 hours as SES crews prepare for a busy night.

Parts of the Coast have received more than 60mm of rain in the 24 hours since 9am yesterday.

A strong wind warning has also been issued for coastal waters where speeds of 33 knots are expected to be reached.

The weather should begin clearing tomorrow afternoon and the weekend is expected to be fine.

Tanawha 30mm

Maroochydore 36mm

Noosa Heads 19mm

Why oh why dont some drivers just drive to the conditions????? How many times do you get overtaken in pouring rain by some idiot in a hurry to kill himself or others.

I was driving on the Nicklin Way heading towards the Plaza and was overtaken by a public bus showering everyone in waves of water at Wurtulla. Common sense is a little bit beyond some people, but surely the bus drivers 'should' know better.

Bus drivers are akin to Taxi drivers; they think they are above the rest of us because for some reason.

It seems that all the ingredients to make an idiot are easy;

add rain, mix with car, stir in some SC roads and whola! Instant idiot.
