The final figures are not in yet but it is believed last Saturday’s inaugural Delyse Shearer Pink Day raised around $20,000 towards cancer research and school programs to help children cope with the loss of a parent.
State of Origin legend Dale Shearer and sons Jesse and Jakson were overwhelmed with the show of public support for the event, held at Coolum’s Ronnie Cargill Oval in honour of their late wife and mother who died in February from cancer.
It seemed like half of Coolum was there, with many wearing pink to show their support.

Jesse also played touch with the Origin greats and scored a couple of tries, while Jakson enjoyed refereeing an under-8 exhibition match in front of the big crowd.
Because there was so much happening on the day — two Red Rooster Cup semi-finals, a touch game featuring Former Origin Greats, kids’ rides, live entertainment and a fireworks display — there was no time for the planned auction of sporting memorabilia donated for the event.
Dale is considering setting up a website where fans can bid for the items.
He also plans to run other fundraisers in the future and hoped the pink day would become an annual event.
“Next year it will be bigger and better, with more rides and bigger fireworks,” he said.
The only downside to a fabulously successful day was the unexpected loss by the Coolum Colts to Pomona.
“I think that the team got caught up in the day,” Dale said.
“That would be the worst defence we’ve shown all year.”
