Stop madness on highway

John Steenbergen can’t believe some of the ridiculous behaviour he sees.

His Cooloola Rocks and Minerals business sits just off the Bruce Highway at Kybong and he is constantly astounded at the “weird, stupid” behaviour of drivers on a road that is rated as the worst in Queensland.

Mr Steenbergen says the road needs to be upgraded quickly to four lanes, separated in the middle.

“It would stop all this madness,” he said. “We are always just waiting for an accident to happen.”

In the meantime, though, he said a greater police presence might do much to help slow the carnage.

The highway has an 80kmh limit on the stretch past Mr Steenbergen’s business.

But he says that doesn’t stop vehicles reaching speeds of 100 to 120kmh.

“I’ve seen them almost airborne,” he said. “Days like yesterday, when it is teeming down, they just keep speeding.

“Truckies sit on the bumper bars of the small cars trying to force them out of the way.

“It makes the driver in front a nervous wreck.’’

Mr Steenbergen said he was also astounded by the level of drunkenness he witnessed.

“I’ve seen drivers come in here half stonkered, boasting they have more in the car,” he said.

“It is crazy out there.

“Sometimes I just hold my breath waiting for a big bang, and next comes a motorbike rider, a maniac with a grin on his face, screaming past the lot of them.

“Where are the police to try and stop this madness on this road stretch?

“How many more people must there be maimed or killed?

“Will there be someone killed today or perhaps involved in yet another smash?”

Mr Steenbergen said something must be done because the highway could no longer carry the amount of traffic using it.

“Please station police here. Put speed cameras up in several places. Please stop this carnage,’’ he said.

Where are the police???? there ARE no police!
that' what the opposition has been jumping up and down about for so long!... perhaps at least along this stretch of road, the message is getting through at last -- WE NEED MORE COPS!
Was driving through to gympie early the other morning. A b Double over took me. I was travelling at 80 k's ( near matilda) .. this big white truck flew past me . I let him go ... I thought I'll just see if I can judge his speed by trying to maintain my distance between him . I got to 110 k's ( yes breaking the speed limit) and the truck was still moving away from me ... my estimate would have been 130- to 140 kph for the truck

After reading through this report and provides us readers with a disturbing picture, I would support more police patrols and speed cameras. One only has to travel along the Bruce Highway at Burpengary to see a permanent fixure or the inbound side to the Story Bridge, these being, speed cameras. The camera on the Bruce Highway near the weighbridge at Burpengary stemmed from the amount of road accidents.

Yes, John states some very good facts.

With regards to the Idiots...

I have been travelling this stretch of road weekly for the past eight years. Over this period I have seen the traffic volume increase to a stage where it is inevitable for these types of accidents to continue occurring, on this type of road. Yes, there are idiots. They are a minority, but with the increased traffic volume, their numbers are increasing.

Increase the Police presence on this stretch of road. Install permanent speed cameras. This will soon sort out the idiots.

The road needs to be upgraded quickly to four lanes also, due to the heavy volume of traffic on it.

This will contribute to a much safer road.

Until then, we will continue to see these accidents and deaths on this stretch.

I can only hope that I am not involved myself.

I agree with both sides of the argument, but what has been blaintenly obvious over the last 10 years is the lack off police, why are they so hell bent on bringing out more unmarked cars? If there was more highly visible police cars on the road then more people would obey the law and drive correctly.
I got my licence in JO`s days of the police state and as a young hoon it was whether there was a highway patrol around the next corner, now you can travel hundreds of kms day after day and never see a police car( probably because they`re unmarked).
Crickey the even have o BLACK HUMMER now!!!!

Have your say
