Pomona-based hairdressing success story Surrender Dorothy has added to its awards-cabinet by taking out the Small Employer of the Year category at last week’s Queensland government training awards.
Founded by husband-and-wife team Louise and Rob Starr in 2005, the salon has enjoyed remarkable success, with Louise, pictured, named the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network small business woman of the year in 2006 and the company chosen as the overall outstanding small business of the year in the 2007 Excellence in Business Awards.
Rob has no doubt recognition had come because of the focus on training.
“From day one that’s been our focus,” he said.
“Louise has run that side and I’ve run the financial side, so I know exactly how much it costs ... and it’s a lot. But it definitely brings more back to the business than it costs.”
Not only do customers benefit, but staff are regularly attracted to the salon because of the reputation it has established for its training.
The award turned out to be a dual celebration for Surrender Dorothy which opened its second salon, in Gateway Drive at Noosaville, on the same day.
