In the years of panel vans and flared pants, everyone stopped at Noosa Junction.
It was the only place in town to get a cold drink and bucket of chips after a long surf and it was the heart of Noosa long before Hastings Street drew the crowds.
But as Noosa has changed, so has the Junction’s identity, new president of the Noosa Junction Traders Association James Warner has been charged with the task of sending a breath of fresh air through the shopping and business centre and says the key will be to give it an identity.
“Up until this week there’s been no real map guide for the Junction and it just made complete sense to provide people and tourists with one,” Mr Warner said.
“Every resort owner has been saying, ‘we’ve been waiting for this’.
“It’s going to give the Junction an identity.”
The map itself was three months in the making and 30,000 copies will be distributed to homes surrounding the Junction, tourist information centres, hotels and resorts and Junction businesses.
Noosa Heads Motel manager Greg Marler said the map would be great for visitors to see just how much shopping variety they had at their fingertips.
“There’s more to shopping in Noosa then just Hastings Street,” he said.
“Hastings Street is a tourist street but the Junction is also a tourist strip.”
Cooroy artist Sophia Blake was chosen to put her style on the map.
She said the artwork reflected the Junction’s laid back and funky style.
Along with other initiatives including a licence for buskers to operate in the Junction, an informal Saturday music club and two street festivals about to launch including the Woodford Wind-down in January and Carnivale Noosa in May, Mr Warner said things we’re looking good for Junction traders.
“We’ve gone up 20 businesses since April,” he said. “We’re bucking national trends.”
Mr Warner said most people didn’t realise there were 257 businesses in the area, not much larger than a couple of football fields.
He encouraged everyone to experience the great shops in the Junction.
