Police have called off a search for a surfer who was believed to be missing off Mudjimba Island and are appealing to the public for help.

Officers received a call from a tourist staying at Surfair Resort just after 7.30am who said they had seen a surfer start to paddle back to shore but not make it back to the beach.

The caller said he had seen the surfer turn around from Mudjimba Island but the man said the surfer had not made it back to the beach about 20 minutes later.

The caller said he could see no sign of the man in the water.

A second person approached lifesavers and reported he found a surf board washed up on the beach.

Police, water police, surf life savers and the Energex Community Rescue helicopter launched a search for the man but found no sight of him.

The search was called off just before 11am.

Police have asked the man who reported seeing the broken board to phone 5475 2444.

Anyone with information is asked to call police communications on 5475 2444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Hopefully this is a false alarm and nobody has come to any harm. However, some of the surfers and kayakers who paddle/swim out to Mudjimba Island should assess their fitness/equipment/surf conditions/weather before setting out. We fish/snorkel off Mudjimba regularly, and are constantly seeing people who are completely exhausted and having to be carted back to the mainland by lifesavers; and last time we went out, we had to rescue some bloke on one of those cheap moulded plastic kayaks (suitable only for calm river type conditions) who had fallen in and was being swept away from his kayak by the strong currents around the island. And the wind on that day was at least 20 knots, and there was a big rough swell running too. I don't know if such a thing exists or not (we launch at Mooloolaba), but perhaps there needs to be some sort of warning notice at Mudjimba about how dangerous the crossing to the island can be (if there isn't one already)?
