Jessie loses her battle

Jessie loses her battle

Surrounded by family and loved ones, Jessie Schroder took her final breath on Tuesday.

The six-year-old was diagnosed with stage four Wilm’s tumour about a year ago.

She put up a brave fight but when it became apparent that there were no more doctors could do to slow the cancer, Jessie, her mum Kellie and her brothers and sisters decided to make the most of the time they had left together.

When Jessie asked for a party in the park so all the kids could come and play for an afternoon, the Sunshine Coast banded together to make it happen.

In late November, Jessie got her wish, complete with painting, jumping castle, balloons, food and lots of laughter thanks to the generosity of local businesses and families.

Many people said when they looked at Jessie’s beaming face, they saw their own children and wanted to do whatever they could to make Jessie’s illness easier for both her and those she loved.

Jessie’s story was first told to the Sunshine Coast when one of her mum’s friends rang radio station Mix-FM because Kellie was having trouble getting Jessie to her treatments in Brisbane in April last year.

A Chancellor Park couple donated their car so Kellie could ferry Jessie to and from treatments.

It was one of the first times the Coast would open their hearts to this sweet little girl.

Just after 9am on Tuesday, the Sunshine Coast lost their little angel.

Her mum had taken her home from Nambour General Hospital where she was admitted just after Christmas when tumours in her lungs started affecting her breathing.

She died at home in her bedroom with pink walls. It was the first time she had a bedroom all to herself.

Details of Jessie’s memorial service are still being finalised.

So sad to hear about Jessie. Trying not to cry, but the tears are welling up.

What I would like to see is an Annual "Jessie's Party" held in her honour.

Sunshine Coast - show your support.

I absolutely support the idea of "Jessie's party" each year for sick Sunshine Coast children...can we call on Caroline and Mark to coordinate this??

Thank you Mark and Caroline at 92.7 for doing such a fanastic thing for this family. We helped out with the party in the park and saw at first hand how a small group of people can inspire a whole community to reach into their hearts.

The light in Jessie's eyes and her million dollar smile makes me stop and realise that there's so much to live for, not for ourselves but for those around us.

An annual Jessie's Day in the park would be a fitting tribute to the memory of this spirited little girl and all the kids doing it tough with serious illnesses.

Count me in, I'd love to help.
